Dublin

I'm going to Dublin for the first time for a long weekend. Any suggestions to what I shouldn't miss? I'm 52, don't mind walking everywhere and just don't want to come home wishing I'd done things differently.

was for a family with children travelling to Dublin, the advice and the links remain valid. (Some of Dublin's best attractions are not really within sensible walking distance of each other. You might spend an hour or so, walking through some quite 'grotty' areas, to get between some of them. The hop-on, hop-off buses make more sense).

As well as the Guinness Storehouse and the Temple Bar area (including the wonderful Gallagher's Boxty House), Kilmainham Gaol might be worth visiting. It's 2 miles west of the city centre but you can get within walking distance by taking a tour bus to nearby and walking the last bit.

Phoenix Park is good for a walk, and is so big it has a racecourse, the President's house, and (used to - don't know if it's still there) a zoo.

You can also visit St Michan's Church and see the mummified skeletons.
Would recommend Gallagher's Boxty House although you may end up sharing a table as we did.

Take a DART trip to Dun Laoire and walk the East Pier. Heaven.

pheonix park is nice, weekend always can watch people playing polo there as well. wicklow nearby got nice seaside as well. recommend theri coach tikect, could get 3 days or tickect with different combination, really good value and you can get on and off unlimited.

There is a walking literary tour which is interesting and very enjoyable. It combines info on many of the famous Dublin authors with a bit of a pub crawl and is great craic. I don't have the info on it but I'm sure you would find it on a Dublin tourism site.
You might also find the iwalks section of this site interesting http://www.visitdublin.ie/. In fact that site seems quite good for lots of general info.
The sightseeing bus is a great tour and if taken at the start of your holiday, it help to give you your bearings of the city as well as allowing you to hop on/off anywhere that you would like to explore a bit more.
Of course you just have to have (at the very least) one pint of guinness.

Museum of music, great for nostalgia, Guiness factory and you have got to take a trip on the open topped tour bus, the drivers are hilarious. K.

Kilmainham jail, just in case being english doesn't embarrass you enough.
Don't bother with 'the oldest pub' which is just very busy and very expensive.
The national museum is a treasure....well it would be. trinity College / Book of kells if you can get in.

lil o' lady: I went to the oldest pub and its tiny, overcrowded and overpriced! Dont bother with it everyone.
