On XP, go to Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance. In the left-hand side bar you should see "Suystem Restore". To the best of my knowledge, this will only "turn back the clock" to specific times (chosen by the computer, though you can manually add restore points) and only restores changes to programs (either updates or the addition of new programs). It does not restore deleted files.

This is the system restore for Windows Millenium.

Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.

Choose "Restore my computer to an earlier time."

Click Next.

Choose a restore point. Select a date when you know that the system last worked, the available restore dates will be highlighted in Bold.

You will receive a warning and some additional info, click Next, once finished the Restore will reboot the system.

or you could just try using Tweak XP if you have it and use the system restore on there. Either way you do the system restore, both will do the same thing
