I got a day off work today which i booked in advance. The boss has the cheek to ring me up and ask if i can come in and cover for someone.

Can they do that?
Meaning are they allowed to ring you up at home, ask you to come into work on your day off and then shout at you because you say your staying at home?

If you are either in Management or a key employee then, yes, your employer or a representative of your firm/company can call you at home, however they should keep the call civil and respect your decision.
I would report your boss for verbal abuse, it's not on under any circumstances
