you need to first activate the number pad, then while holding down the alt key type 171 on the number pad (won't work on the number keys along top) relese alt and this will give you , you can also get a by typing 172

Markysngc....Thanks for your prompt reply. I was really excited until I realised I don't have a number pad on this laptop - I just have the row of numbers along the top..Oh well thanks for trying...

laptops pretty much always do have a number pad, look at the keys on right hand side of keyboard, 789 uio jkl m

If these have numbers on them as well as letters that is the number pad, to ativate this it is normally hold down the fn for function key and press another key (f8 on mine) and then the same key combination to swith it off again
think yours may avtually have a num lock key, press this and the letter keys wth the little blue numbers become the number pad

From packards bell's website

Note: To optimise space and weight, certain computers use compact keyboards that do not provide a numeric keypad. If this is the case, you may use the integrated key-pad by activating Num Lock and using the keys with characters printed in blue (the keys in the centre-right of the keyboard). Press Num Lock again to return the keys to their normal

Markysngc.. tried your suggestion it still isn't happening..
it just makes the letters on those keys smaller - but doesn't affect the blue numbers.. My son-in-law has just informed me I am "depriving a village somewhere of its idiot" see this is what I get......j/k 1/2
