Tomorrow it's my other half's turn to pick the book for her reading group. She's asked me to find one for her, as I will be going near a bookshop today.
ANY IDEAS ???
Last month they read Extrememly Loud And Incredibly Close. They all hated it. I started it myself last year, and didn't bother finishing it. So I need something they will all enjoy. I suggested The Mysterious Flame Of Queen Loana, and she told me I was being stupid.
I'm just back from hols and read two Richard and Judy suggestions both of which I really enjoyed (though for the record I don't rate Dick & Judy myself).
Anyway, The Interpretation of Murder is a brilliant detective story involving Freud in 1920's NY, or This Book Will Save Your Life is the quirkiest off the wall story I have read in a long time.
"Shadow of the Wind" is one of the best books I have read.
I have just finished "The Rose of Sebastopol" which, although not the best book I have read, is an easy book to read and has some good questions for reading groups.
"We need to talk about Kevin" is also one of the best I have read and Zadie Smith's "On Beauty" is also good for a discussion group.
A Thousand Splendid Suns is a wonderful book as is The Kite Runner .I can recommend Rose of Sebastapol too .Another book clubby thing they may like is Suite Franaise by Irene Nemirovsky and TheTwins, by Tessa de Loo....these sort of books throw up good subjects for discussion .....unlike my penchant for blood and guts a la ..murder mysteries !
Mind you historical type murder mystery things are good to discuss too especially The Shardlake books by C J Sansom who also wrote Winter in Madrid ...which is well worth a discussion for a reading group. Set during the Spanish civil war ..great book
"Miss Smilla's feeling for snow" - by Peter Hoeg (not sure of the right spelling of his last name - Danish writer. Good story & became a film in the 90ies.
(modern Industry & crime story in Copenhagen snow)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Beautifully written, VERY different to the norm and heartbreaking. As this book is narrated by Death it does take a little while to get used to the style of writing, but definately worth a little effort. I loved this book and will read it again and again.
