Got a new Sony Bravia 1080p but can't seem to get the full screen looking right ??? What settings should we be using

What have you got it connected to? Sky+; V+? freeview box?

Have you used high quality HDMI cables and changed the format to HD through your tv onscreen menu?

It is connected to cable (which is broadcasting in HD 720 which apparently is all they can do at the moment) and all the settings are right (I am in California at the moment) and if you have it set to 'normal' the pic is fantastic but not full screen, if you go to zoom its not as good, however since asking the question I think I have found out that nobody is actually broadcasting in the full 1080p yet, its all very confusing but thanks for replying !
