This use of the phrase 'a do' started as far back as the 16th century, really as a mistaken version of 'ado' - as in "Much ado about nothing". It originally suggested 'stir' or 'fuss', which then took on the meaning of 'outing', 'party' or whatever the fuss was all about.

The OED suggests that the origin is dialectal or vulgar and can be traced back in this sense to 1824. This is a complete guess, but could it be related to ado (commotion, stir, fuss etc.)?
