dogs that howl....

any ideas why they do this?

Dogs howl to call other members of the pack together.

If you have left the dog, it is howling to call you back.  If dog is howling cos the music to eastenders is on then he knows everyone is usually together at that time, and wants the group to be reunited. either that or he wants you to turn channel over.

I agree with Kings, east enders are truly awful.

Dogs are very close (or identical) to wolves and it is a social activity. Both Wolves and dogs are social animals.

I think too that there is an element of pleasure in it?, kind of pack bonding?

Also we have had two dogs who howled in their sleep, this is tremendously exciting when they are sleeping on the foot of your bed!!
