yeah when i spend any time with my northern friends up north.
yes it is used a lot in this area,
It can mean many things, depending on how it is pronounced,
ie: Hello, or, I say, or, look out, etc.
I use it when something i thought was not going well turns out a success, e.g. I am looking for a pair of shoes in the stockroom and some bimbo has put them in the wrong box, so i start looking in other boxes, the same style in a different colour maybe, and low and behold I find the red pair in the black pair's box, and I would then say ' aye up' or sometimes even 'aye eye', which is a more lancashire saying
