This film is very similar to your question. I was puzzled throughout the movie and it wasn't until the last few minutes did it reveal what was actually going on, I had to watch it again to fully appreciate it.

i did wonder in the wizard of opz
when they say hes wonderful
because of the wonderful things he does .
but he didnt do wonderful things
he was no more a wizard than if you dropped a man in the middle of a jungle with some hitech gadgets
and he settkled amongst some tribesmen.
hed seem allpowerful
but in reality
he be less powerful than the tribesmen
take away his gadgets and hed be useless.
for example without gps or a compass even how would he navigate thru a jungle ?
