I hear copper is great as the slugs actually cannot cross it... If your plant is in a pot you can buy copper tape - or copper strips that link together... I have quite a few copper stips and use them as en edge to my flower bed to stop the slugs getting in

Thank you Nosha,I will try that
i tried the copper last year and it was fine whilst it was bright and shiney but once it weathered it did not work this year i have bought huge saucers to stand the pots in and kept them filled with water so far so good i dont think slugs can swim. not a lot of help if yours are planted in the garden though

Thanks ruthann, mine are all in pots ,i will try that
thank you
Thats a clever idea, ruthann.

I dont think they can swim either, but watch out, because some of them can pole-vault!
I have quite a few hostas in pots and in the ground and have had great success with B&Q Slug Barrier Tape. It's a self-adhesive tape you stick around the pot and the snails won't cross it and cost about 5 for 4 metres. For the ground hostas I use Growing Success Slug Stop which are granules you circle the plant with and cost about 5 for 3.5 Litres.

Thank you Moonshadow
christine how are your hostas mine are looking really good they seem to love standing in the water and no sign of slugs or snails also birds seem to prefer to have a bath in the saucers rather then in the bird bath
