weed burning.

I'm seriously considering the use of a propane weed burner for the control of the weeds on dry - paved and gravelled areas.Has anyone out there had sufficient experience with the use of one to give a considered opinion as to their efficiency. Instinct suggests to me that apart from "cooking" the top-growth, it won't do much to kill off some very persistent root systems without a sustained application. In a previous life I used the paraffin pump-up burners but never returned to the sites to see what medium, long term effect there may have been.
I want to do my bit for the environment but I don't want to spend my time burning off the same weeds.

stuff like docks will need more than one treatment but I find it works very well on my block paved patio and also seems to stop weed seeds germinating as they get cooked too.

Mine is a cheapo weed wand one...if I wanted to do a bigger area then I'd go for the dearer one that lays down a sheet of flame.

not sure if using a product that is made from oil is anymore environmentally friendly than glyphosate though. I have one because I have a tortoise so any kind of cheimcal weedkiller is no go for me

Thanks woofgang for your response, I am realising that several attacks would be needed against the toughest weeds but still, everything for the environment. Which is why I'm thinking propane over oil-based . I'm also thinking of getting a couple of chickens, another reason for non-chemical intervention, anyway with a burner it's easy to barbecue on the hoof - so to speak !! Thanks again for your contribution.

Should I say then that my experience of the paraffin pressure burner in my previous life was quite fraught and my bit for the environment is not to use chemicals.
We are helped enormously with the cold winters so the main battle is against the weeds, and I never appreciated how impressive some of them look when left to it..
