I must admit that this is one of my pet hates. It doesn't take much for parents to educate their children from an early age in social skills. Sadly though , if the parents don't know any better , then they can not teach their children accordingly. I also hate to sit beside someone who not only eats very noisily but talks continuosly whilst eating , displaying the contents of their mouth for all and sundry to see and spraying food over everyone in the process. It is absolutely disgusting and there is no need for it.

there is one thing worse than someone making a noise while they eat: someone making a noise while they eat when they're on the phone to you!

I was always taught that the essence of good table manners were to eat as unobtrusively as possible and not to offend or disgust anyone else.  An awful lot of people appear to believe that others actually want to see what they've got in their mouths.  Also - people eating sandwiches with two hands .... aaaarrrrggghhh!  They are NOT that heavy.  If they're too big, cut them in half!
A real bug bear of mine too! Can't stand watching people on the telly, and being able to see their chewing gum getting a good masticating - Alex Ferguson take note...

I agree - in our factory, a bloke who sits opposite me in the canteen sluprs his gravy and it makes me feel sick.  He is the husband of a nice lady who I work with in the office so I can't even moan to my colleagues without upsetting her!  It is getting to the point where if I know the meal for a particular day involves grave, I'' make some excuse to go offsite for lunch.  It's disgusting!

And another one who sits at the end of the same table, reaches out for the salt, no matter where it is on the table.  I swear, if he leans across me one more time whilst I'm eating, I will slaphim.  Has he never heard of 'excuse me, can you pass me the salt please?'  To me these are basic manners!

Absence of table manners are a result of the absence of tables! A lot of modern homes do not use dining rooms for their intneded purpose, and the social activity of eating and talking around a table are unknown for a lot of families. Add it to the notion of talking out loud in cenemas, as though people are at home - the result of the video/DVD revolution - it's progress Jim, but not as we know it.
I also hate when people yawn - big old open mouth, teeth handing out and tongue all bunched up - without covering their mouths. Aaarrrgh!
I think people have less table manners because parents are softer. No one wants to spank their kids or be 'mean' therefore
a simple refusal negates all parental "efforts" to get the kid to be polite, sit up straight, cover your mouth when you couch etcetera.
At dinner tonight a 4 and a half year old boy was making a ruckus at the table pretending to be sick and coughing everywhere, banging his toy around and yelling. The mom would feeble repeat "Jake, don't do that... cover your mouth... be quiet..." and let the kid continue. I wanted to slap her!
Also used to have a friend that could never keep her mouth closed no matter how many times I tell her how disgusting it is.
Alright I'm done ranting.

gotta say that the only people I've noticed (sorry, heard) eating like pigs are all mid-30s or older.  My boss in a previous job used to eat so disgustingly that I could hear her from nearly 15 feet away!  I swear, the woman could crunch orange juice.

Yes, it really is disgusting that people are allowed to eat and even yawn in public. It's political correctness gone mad!

Whatever happened to that more respectable age when self-expression and the right to behave naturally were frowned upon? Women did what they were told by men and children were seen but not heard.

I was brought up with very good table manners - it all starts from the high chair!

Well, that's after you've stopped pouring custard all over your hair!

I think that it's a bigger problem. It seems that people have lost the idea of manners altogether.
