I was just wondering do you suppose this will include himself and all the other memebers of parliment when it comes to their pay increase?

On the 17th June

Brown said ministers would not accept a pay rise "given the importance of public sector pay restraint at a time of economic uncertainty". However that only covers the Ministers pay rise.

Brown in Jan 08 rejected the pay rise for MP's that was above inflation, wanting it to be in line with other public sector workers. So with his track record it doesn't look like Darling will get much choice other than a pay increase comparable with other public sector.

I think the Briotish people are endowed with a tremendous amount of common sense and a sense of fair play, so it would be easy for the government to sell the idea of below inflation pay increases, as long as it was the same for all of us.
But, look for example at student nurses, living on a bursary of just over �5000 pa, compared to captains of industry on �150,000pa to �25,000pa where the fat double chinned board room members enjoy rises of 16% plus, and the student nurses are eating pot noodle to make ends meet.
The next time you see Digby Jones on the telly, count his chins, it's not a health problem, he's just a greedy fat bar steward.
I've just had 2 glasses of plonk and I'm getting disproportionately angry. My daughter is a student nurse.
Unfortunately, we don't have any treble chinned rich fat bar stewards in the family.
Of course, if we did, given human nature, I might be defending them.

That might be the case ruby but what about all the other perks. They will increase their pay above inflation. They always do. They will make everyone else tighten their belts but continue on their merry way happy in the knowledge that even if it's slightly less than what they wanted it doesn't really matter becausre they will get it another way, ie expenses, backhanders and so.
We may be aware of the odd indiscretion amongst MPs but thats just the tip of the iceberg.

Before this blows up into prices and incomes saga as happened before why don't they consider removing the cause of the problem. That is the high duty on petrol and diesel. To make up the loss of revenue they could switch the taxes to people who have gained the most over the past few years, the higer earners. A 60% tax rate would cover it probably.
