Baby with Blocked Nose!
My 11 month old daughter is ill with a viral infection (officially diagnosed yesterday!)... she's on antibiotics.
But it's been a nightmare the past few nights as she can't breathe through her nose - its a vicious circle of her sleeping, waking with a dry mouth, needing water and then not being able to drink because she can't breathe from her nose and then being up for hours crying.
Any advice?!
We've tried Karvol vapour rub on her chest, we've put her head under a couple of pillows so she's at an angle but still no joy!
TIA X

I did everything you did, but also put a bowl of hot water with baby olbas or karvol in, near his cot, as well as some on a tissue near his head. I also used nasal drops which you can get from the chemist, and one of those nasal aspirators (not sure if that's the right name) where you basically suck any erm, snot and gunk out of their nostrils - you don't suck it far enough for it to go into your mouth!
You could also try sitting with her in the bathroom and running a hot bath or put the shower on - obviously best done during the day or just before bed.
Hopefully the antib's will kick in soon hun!

Would giving her something to wet her mouth rather than to drink - a little sponge on a stick (like they use in hospitals - ask at a chemist) or a pipette of water to squirt in more easily?
Antibiotics don't get rid of viruses but do boost the immune system so people tend to get better a day or two earlier on antibiotics than without.
I think the idea of a bowl of steaming water with something like eucaplyptus in near her bed is a good idea.

Thank again everyone, i've got some sort of bloomin virus too, unfortunately it was me that passed it to her (so i believe) as ive got really swollen glands at the moment.
Such a frustrating thing for a little one to have!!! All i can do is try everything you wonderful people haxe suggested and hope it clears up in the next few days z

Hiya Nat, my little one had a cold at two weeks old so there was nothing we could give her apart from saline nosedrops; at first they didn't seem to do a lot, but as long as you give her the drops regularly (every two hours or so) then they did seem to have an affect and we had dried bogies flying out everywhere - lovely!
Hope she starts feeling better soon x

Hi Nat
This may sound very stupid and I am trying to find the E mail I received telling me this, but try rubbing Vicks into her feet and put a pair of socks on them before she goes to bed. It's not a wind up and apparently does work (haven't got a clue why or how). Or you could try Medised but I am not sure at what age you can use it from.
Regards Jan

My vote is for snuffle babe too as it worked for several kids in my care. Beware - too much Vicks or any strong preparation designed for adults can cause breathing problems as could medised as it depresses breathing. Also pillows can smother - put the pillows under the head of the matress instead, that way baby's head is still raised for draining but no danger!
Have never heard of the Vicks on the feet with sox thing! Most interesting! If you try it out and it works, do let us know!

Quick advice, take her into the bathroom and put the shower or hot tap on so the room gets stuffy and hot. This will help loosen the nose.
Also massaging her nose from the bridge to the cheek (where the synuses are). This will help drain the synus and ease!
Poor dab, it's awful when you feel helpless! x

Thanks everyone for your advice, hopefully it'#ll help many others in the dreaded blocked nose situation.
Fortunately for me and my little one, the antibiotics seem to have kicked in and she feels and looks MUCH better!! No more runny or blocked nose and she's sleeping much better.
Unfortunately i didnt see the Vapour Rub on feet thing until she got better, but if anyone tries it do let us know!
Thanks again! x

I can highly recommend an vapouriser from Boots that you plug in. It has little pads that you put in it and fills the room with vapour like olbas oil (hence the name!) I always use this when my daughter has a cold and it really works well. They are 20 and you can buy further refill pads for them too.
