I am thinking of taking a driving holiday in the Florida Keys, perhaps from Miami.
I was wondering when would be the best time of the year to travel ? Also, is two weeks sufficient time to get from Miami to Key West and back? And, is it best to book accommodation before travel or are motels plentiful?
Oh, anything really, any "titbits" or useful hints.
you could just about do it as a day trip - a long day trip. it's really like a long bridge hopping from one island to the next. Some are tiny, some have decent sized settlements. There's not a huge number of motels but quite a lot in Key West itself (which is a nice place and closer to Havana than to Miami; but the other potential stops don't really offer all that much to do).
Anyway, 2 weeks is plenty. I'd give it 3-4 days myself.
Wouldn't recommend July or August. Weather too tropical - steamy, hot and thunderstorms mostly. We went in August about 7 years ago and there were a lot of vagrant-types on the streets in Key West, sat around smoking cannabis, etc.
Sister in law went the following May and said it was wonderful, very clean. So just try to avoid the high season if you can. 3-4 days is more than enough to explore Keys and then get back to Miami.
Avoid hurricane season: June - end of October - not a good place to be in a bad storm when you're a tourist. It'll be a fun trip, so just relax and enjoy.
