Can anyone tell me why my 11year old cat has now resorted to making the most awful yowling noise? she only seems to do it when she is out of sight of me?

She might be in heat. Get her a companion or partner.
well if she is in heat she may try to fight with a female or mate a male so maybe think twice about that. At 11 years she might be going a bit deaf, blind or demented or any combination of the same...its seems significant that she only does it when you leave her. Can I suggest a vet checkup to find out what is going on?
Could be a sign of dementia,is quite common in elderly cats and dogs (although 11 isn't all that old). Does she also yowl at night. It may also be that her sight or hearing is fading. I would definitely take her to the vets for a check up.
Sorry Woofgang - I should have read through the other answers first. At least we agree!
My old cat does it - she wanders up stairs and makes the most awful noise. I have taken her to the vet and apart from being very old, deaf and senile she is fine! Seriously if they start losing their hearing they become more vocal. It is always a good idea to get them checked over if their behaviour starts to change - at 11 she may need an MOT just to make sure she's okay.
It is just possible that it could be a thyroid problem. I took Bandit to the vet to the other day for a check up and the vet mentioned that she could have an over active thyroid, one of the symptons is yowling a lot. It may be worth a mention to your vet. I don't believe this is a serious problem if it is this and it is easily treatable.
Cheers Sue
I have a young deaf cat......the noise he makes when he loses sight of me is deafening!!...sometimes it drives me mad,but I have come to realise that he must get easily disorientated and I am like an anchor.....so it is lots of cuddles for him.
My 2 year old male does that. Don't think he has a hearing problem cos I only have to mention the word "dinner" or open a packet in the kitchen and he appears from 2 floors up.

I think it is a "where are you?" thing. He only does it if he comes in and I am upstairs and then he SCREAMS until I answer him. Once he knows where I am, he shuts up.
LOL-I wish mine would!!!.....he carries on a constant commentary on everything .....think he needs a companion to talk to !
Just because he shuts up, doesn't mean I get peace. My 11 year old female chitters away all the bloody time!!!!! She's funny, she used to talk loads and then when I got the kitten she stopped speaking for 18 months (I think i was sent to Coventry) and now she just goes on and on and on!!!
