we are two young musicians who have booked tickets to fly to the big apple to play acousticaly(?) around the city for five weeks,We are broke.What can we do?

You could get a hostel somewhere for the 5 weeks and busk when you get a chance to help pay for your room. Doing a quick search the cheapest I found was $20/bed/night, but I'm sure you could get cheaper, especially if you asked around and let people know you were looking for a longer than average stay.

On a side note, if you need to get somewhere that's too far to walk, I'd advise the subway - dead easy to navigate and I think it was $7.50 for the whole day, or $2 for a single. I know you guys are on a super-tight budget, but that is the cheapest way of getting around outside of walking.

not sure how tolerant the NY's would be to two Brit buskers.

you certainly need to provide at last one overight accomodation address to customs, and they'll also be interested in how long you're staying, and how you'll be supporting yourself.

I had a pal who stayed in a youth hostel in New York, she said it was okay but you had to take all your belongings with you each day, but I guess you could rent a locker at the train station to put stuff in.
Try & borrow some money to go, its a great place.

When going through Immigration, look smart and put the name of a 3-4 star hotel down, and know where it is. If asked about the arrangements, tell them your secretary made the bookings. Make sure you have a credit card with you if they ask how you are going to pay for it all. US Immigration is not pleasant, but if you are confident and keep it simple, it is a breeze
