I used to have a fiesta and it was written off as uneconomical to repair.. I bought it back of the insurance company as salvage and got it repaired at a cheap garage and then flogged it.... It was perfectly safe to drive just too expensive for their allocated garage to repair... and as I used an little independent mechanic and body repair place they were cheaper.. I made a good fast buck!! WOuld only recommend it to someone who knows the right contacts though! You dont want to be left with a car you cannot repair!
most cat c cars will be left with their owners to do as they wish with them, its cheaper that way for the insurance companies.so you could get it repaired or simply scrap it.

Surely it depends on type of insurance cover held,
anyway cat c if repaired has to go through a vic test to prove repair work is of a good/safe standard.

Afaik you can only keep a written off car if it is a non fault claim- in other words the OTHER insurers will let you keep the car.If you claim on your own insurance they will keep the car.
VIC is to ensure car is not a ringer
