I was out walking on the moors at the wkend, we'd trecked off the beaten track to discover a different way back, the moor looked lovely but when on it, the terrain was tough, damp and very difficult to walk on. We had a great view and In the distance we could see unusual cloud formations with streams to ground, we presumed it was rain, it looked good so I got my phone out to take a photo. The image in the viewfinder when suddenly a massive flash and a hugh roar of thunder, I didn't get the photo but looked to my left and a grey thunder clouds we're almost above us. This was one of the most scariest experiences of my life. Having always had an irrational fear of being struck by lightening my worst fear was being realised. We two people the tallest things on the highest ground, no trees, nothing except us on a vast expanse of marshy moorland with a lightening storm almost above us. I was petrified, the terrain was so bad it was impossible to run without twisting ankles, I couldn't see myself lying down in the wet ground as I would still have been the most prominent object so kind of ran crouching and scrambling and falling, on all fours heading in the direction of the blue sky. This was one of my scariest moments. The clouds in the distance I discover today were funnel clouds (tornado). It was such a beautiful day, a beautiful place, I was in paradise one moment and hell the next. This made me ill for two days and I didn't even get wet. So I wonder what really scares YOU?
I hate the sensation of falling from a great height, so I'd be no good a t parachute jumping. I have no problem with heights - I love travelling by plane, I have been up the highest buildings in the world and loved it - but falling I don't like. My worst experience was on a fairground ride, a giant swingboat that went almost upside down and I didn't feel securely enough held in. I felt the blood drain from my face and even heard somebody say 'Look at that man's face!'
I trod on one as a child and the pain was staggering.
I am an avid scuba diver and pretty much nothing fazes me, I've dived with sharks (not great whites obviously, but some pretty scary ones), stingrays, barracudas etc etc etc...,and all have been fine, BUT, as soon as I see a jelly fish, my dive is over.
your fears are really interesting, i expected to read about life threatening fears but they are so diverse. Blind people is a new one on me.
JockSporran I know the fear of falling too, the old Pirate Ship rides are the worst, even driving over large, high bridges can bring this on.
This subject has fascinated me and thank you for contributing.
Death scares me. I'm one of those people who essentially believes we're all just sacks of meat and bones, so when we die - that's it. I don't know why, but I just find the idea of suddenly not being around anymore frightening.
But there again I'm 18 - who isn't scared of death at this age?
I'm also scared of heights (or depths, to be pedantic). Plus the only thing that really makes my skin crawl is sexual violence or 'unpleasantness' in any way I suppose.
Not much really scares me, really. But I'll probably think of something else the minute I log off.
China dolls, clowns and ventriloquist's dummies - I agree, they're all skin crawlers.
My biggest fear is that I'll be like I am now for the rest of my life.
Forgot this weird one! Koumpounophobia.
I avoid any clothes that have buttons. My cousin has exactly the same phobia, so I wonder if it's more common than you think. My sister has an irrational fear of big flags. We havn't found a name for that one yet.
Remember that earthquake we had a few months ago? Well THAT scared me. Even though I knew pretty much immediately what it was, and remembered that earthquakes in this country are puny by international standards, when this one shook the room then boy, was I scared!
I would not ever want to experience a quake of the magnitude such as those in the US or in Asia, and my heart goes out to those who have to experience them.
