how did england use secret service against spain before spanist armada set sail to invade england?

there is very little surviving information on secret service activities at this time.  We know that Walsingham had agents in spain, and these certainly provided information on the bulding of the armada, and that he also ran agents in holland which would give informatio on troop movements.
