For Xp, click Start, Control Panel, System. Under System Properties, click Hardware, Device Manager. Click Sound Video & Game Controllers, then your onboard sound device (probably something like AC97 audio device) & under Device Usage choose Do not use this device in any hardware profile (disable).

when you first turn on the computer before windows starts loading you should see it flash up a message saying "press F2 to enter setup" press F2 at this point (or just keep pressing it slowly from when you hit the power button)

once you are in the setup screen have a hunt round and you should find the option to disable onboard sound then save and quit from the setup.
