why is it supposed to be bad luck to put a umbrella up indoors

Plenty of info on the web about this - there isn't a definitive answer, as the origins have been lost or obscured through time.

The most likely explanation is that opening an old fashioned umbrella indoors was likely to cause injury to a person or damage to an object
