Can anyone give me a definite, simple answer to my following dilemma. I want to buy a Vauxhall Astra Estate, Design model.
Would petrol be a better buy than a diesel?
The MPG for the 1.6 petrol is 44

woodchopper - very much dependent on how you drive. If you have a heavy right foot, you will never get good fuel economy.
funkylad - very much depends on mileage.
the difference in price of filing up a tank (52litres) will be 6.76 each time (Petrol cheaper)
But you should get around 629 miles from a tank of diesel compared to 480 miles to tank of petrol.
Road Tax: Diesel will be 120 for year, Petrol will be 145 per year.
Both are insurance group 6
List price for diesel is 18,340 compared to 15,977 for petrol.
As mentioned earlier, one other important factor (which I can't find) is what the service intervals will be.

Hi, A few answers to you question, Fuel, Better with a derv, Reliability, Dervs are now cleaner, Loger services less cost to your pocket, life span depending on how you look after the motor Eg/ regular services etc,150.000+ Resellable, No comparison dervs are better & hold their price, Adavantage, No damp starting problems, A work horse will stand the hard slog of everyday life, History ask a local Comp what sort of miles their trucks do, the one I drove many years ago 200,000 no problem.
When going to get an Astra Design we initially wanted to go for a diesel.
A guy at one of the dealerships asked about our usage which is not much as we both live within walking distance of work so he said it would be far more economical to buy a diesel unless the saving between petrol and diesel prices would be levelled out by uses.
We went for a petrol and are very glad we did.
