tow truck
anyone got a rough idea of what it would cost for my vehicle to be towed home from the breakdown site - approximately 2 miles only.
Even though the distance is not far - can I assume there is a minimum standard callout charge, irrespective of the distance?

Would you believe I do have breakdown cover - Roadside assistance from the RAC. I rang them on the night in question - they did arrange for a local towtruck to come out - but they said I wasn't covered because I had lost my car key (I have no spare) - so it was therefore classed as 'driver error' - not covered.
200 - b****y hell. It only cost my son that to be towed back home the month before from 70 miles away - I was only 2 miles from home. Apologies - but I do indeed hope you're way incorrect with that figure!!

I have just looked at my RAC cover and to be honest the list of exclusions is baffling. It used to be much simpler before they were taken over by Aviva. Before then it was for members benefit, not shareholders. If you have roadside only, they will transport you and your vehicle up to ten miles but only if you are 'broken down' and they cannot repair at the roadside. I cannot see anywhere in the policy about lost keys. Give them a ring and ask where in the policy document does it say that you are not covered. I broke my key in the lock once (a long time ago) and they sent out a locksmith who made up a new key on the spot.
If it turns out they are correct, check you car insurance. You may be covered under that.
