Rush hours snarl up at each side but on a clear run I've been from one to the other in 30 minutes. At the Edinburgh end I used to take a right around the Hermiston Gate roundabout and hit the A71, though you can come off earlier, and head in on the A8.
I used to park in the Castle Terrace NCP and walk through the park into town - again this can fill up if you are late. This is handy for the East. There is another NCP at the other end of Princes' Street (St.James Center), but the entrance is approached from Queen's Street (run's parallel to Princes' Street) In fact, there are loads of car parks dotted around. It depends largely on where you want to go in the city, but you'll see signs everywhere once you get in.
I'd normally advise the NCP website here, but in their search function they can't find Edinburgh! Brilliant, pure brillaint!
Check this instead (excuse the length of the link!)
I'm sure any locals may be able to point you in the direction of some free parking ... although it always seemed a raity to me. Maybe it's easier to find the further out of the centre you are.
Hope this helps!
