A mate of mine who has been divorced for several years now wants to go back to using her maiden name.  Can she just change it or deed poll, I am not really sure, also how does she change it when it comes to work and the tax office,  could she just ring them directly and would there be a lot of hassle.  Sorry if this question is in the wrong topic.

You are allowed to call yourself anything you like, as long as it is not for fraudulent purposes.

Your friend could send a 'round robin' letter to anyone who needs to know - "As from this date, I wish to be known as .... for all formal documentation / accounts etc." and if anyone needs anything else, they'll let her know.

I changed my name in the way Andy describes above. Just make sure that your Bank and all formal people are told in writing, so your cards are all changed. You will need to pay a few quid to change your passport, and you will need to send your passport back so they can change it and re-stamp it. It cost about a fiver when I did mine, but that was 10 years ago.

Thankyou both, much appreciated

A married woman can still use her maiden name if she wishes.  She should have no difficulties as long as she informs people.
