What a relief! No Big Brother!
17 Answers
Thank God that awful programme is over! I never watched it and I have no idea who won this time but I found it offensive, just accidentally seeing a few seconds of it whilst flicking the channels. Whoever started such a phenomenon and why? Perhaps someone out there can tell me why they watched it?? I (think) I would be interested to understand??

It sends some of 'em a bit crackers, they start to behave illogically, do stupid things and start bickering with each other over petty matters (sounds a bit like CB really!!).
There used to be a prog where a pyschologist would interpret the housemates' actions, but I think it got scrapped 'cos folk were far more interested in watching the housemates bickering with each other. (Sounding more and more like CB!!!) lol

You have eloquently described it, thanks! but answer me one other thing, if you will; do you have to be a moron to join the house in the first place? If so, isn't it a bit like the old freak shows, where people went to the fair to view people with 2 heads and such like? Amazed that in this PC Age, it's allowed!
It seems to be folk who are desperate for a bit of fame. Personally it would drive me crazy, but the housemates seem able to put up with anything, as long as they're getting tv coverage.
A lot of folk apply to go on it, but I agree with you - you have to be of "a certain mentality" to want to!
Just had another thought - perhaps some see it as earning easy cash (the "winner" receives a hundred grand).

I'm like you, Tups, in celebrating the end of another series of BB. I don't watch it (and I've no desire to do so) but I get fed up with all the posts about it across many sections of AB.
However, I find it hard to avoid some of the media coverage which makes me laugh when they imply that people will become suicidal, homicidal (or whatever) simply because they have to spend a fairly short period of time with other people from different classes, or with different habits or different opinions. There are around 80,000 people in this country who share their lives (and their living accommodation) with people whom they may well hate, sometimes for many years at a time. The vast majority of people in prison don't commit suicide, attack their cellmates or burst into tears every five minutes just because someone hasn't taken their side in an argument. They've got far more sense (and emotional stability) than the shallow idiots who participate in BB.

>It's a social experiment ........
It WAS a social experiment, the first couple of series.
Now everyone who goes in there is after their 15 minutes of fame.
Anyone who is voted out has already sold their story to the highest bidder and the next morning one of the papers will have a front page headline
"My lesbian gay sex drugs boyfriend / girlfriend hell" or some such rubbish.
It is WELL passed its sell by date.

I'm with you vehelpfulguy, I also think its past its sell by date. I have never watched it, well I watched about half an hour of the first series and thought what a load of rubbish it was. Full of wanna be famous eejits going nowhere and isn't Davina awful, just so full of herself all the time! Let's hope the programme makers call it a day now.
It's comforting to know I'm not the only one who hates the whole concept. I bet the original producers of the programme didn't really do it as a 'social experiment', although that was a good guise for a new money-making, sensation-seeking-and-finding series. As for Davina ...!! I was horrified when she turned up for a week, doing the Terry Wogan Show on Radio 2 last year! I notice she hasn't been asked again! Let's drink to the final (?) demise of Big Brother. May it RIP - please! - forever!
I watched it last year as it was supposed to be an all female affair (stil not sure that it wasn't) and I' watched a couple of the celeb ones but the original idea was good one, a social gathering of different types thrown together, confined in one house. Interesting. (worth watching for Nick's claim 'I was in the Army' assault course escapade.)
However now it's cheap tv to make and CH.4 are loving it!
Channel hopping now is so annoying due to reality tv. celeb air.....wtf

Please remember that all the reality progs are a marketing exercise.
1 They get the tabloids to write about them.
2. People read what is written, & talk about it at work or go onto web sites etc.
3.People watch the prog, & lo & behold every 15mins or so there's an advert break.
4.Advertisers pay a lot of money for adverts.
5.To sum-up; it's cheap to produce, gullible people will watch it, & C4 make a good profit for very little outlay.

cazzz I'm afraid it's impossible not to be offended, even though I don't watch it. It's all pervading! You just can't get away from it. Frightening really that such a phenomenon can captivate the public interest. Perhaps I'm also frightened by the thought that perhaps most of the general public DO like it and I'm in the minority. If the latter is so, God help future generations! However, it's very comforting to find so many like-minded people here! If I was a drinker, I'd drink to you all!
