Itchy Cat

My cat keeps on scratching herself, she's up to date on her flea treatment, so I'm not sure what's up, unless she has hayfever?? Thing is where she is scratching it is now looking sore and red and I keep finding scabs on her. Should I be worried? Will these heal on their own?

It's possible she has a skin condition, I had a cat that we found as a stray, her back was red raw when we took her in, a trip to the vet found she had exema. We got a cream which cleared it right up.

How long as it been going on?

Tigger has the same problem on her back and its not flea related. As Karen says, just take puss to the vet and I'm sure they will give you something for it.

Firstly, what flea treatment are you using, I had a stray cat with a similar problem, turned out he wasnt a stray but had decided he prefer us to a neighbour down the road. He was supposedly up to date on his flea treatment, but after a trip to the vets, a course of antibiotics and steriods, together with frontline, he was fine.

What flea treatment product are you using?

Most flea products take up to 24 hours to kill fleas on the cat, so even if the treatments are up to date you may still see live fleas on the cat, and the cat may scratch, until these die.

She has a flea injection every 6 months, I think it's called Program. Her last one was back in July. She doesn't seem to be scratching as much today and not as bothered as she is sleeping soundly on my bed! I just hope the scabs she has heal without getting infected. But I'm obviously going to keep an eye on her and if they get worse will take her to the vet.

Our cat Molly had a similar thing, in the end I took her to the vet who gave her a steroid base injection and an antibiotic which worked instantly and Molly was no longer in pain itching. We have to now give her flea treatments for the larger cat as she is quite round!

I have an ex-stray cat, now neutered and tamed, he has had flea treatment but still had scabby scurfy skin. Last time he was at the vets the sharp eyed vet spotted what could have been 'dandruff' flakes of skin moving! Under microscope these were seen to be lice. He was treated with Frontline 2 or 3 week ago, now all his scabs have gone and his coat is in fine condition.

Well I had to take puddy to the vet earlier as she was/is still scratching and he gave her an anti inflammatory and antibiotic injection so hopefully she will finally get better and her scabs will heal.
