dishwasher problem

does anyone know how to overcome bad food smells when opening the dishwasher with used plates already inside--everything is rinsed before placing in dishwasher and it is switched on approx every 36 hours

Try running your dishwasher empty, with the soap dispenser filled with vinegar (not your best balsamic - malt will do!) on a normal cycle. It gets rid of all the pongs and the greasy deposits - much cheaper (and more environmentally friendly) than buying that special dishwasher cleaner. I do mine about once a fortnight (it's normally used every day, sometimes twice a day) and it keeps it clean & smelling nice.
