Well, they won't do that again, will they? If they had a white film over them while still alive they were obviously suffering from some type of fungi attack.
Whatever it was.... if you intend to replace the fish please make sure that the tank/pond is cleaned out properly and disinfected.
was it snowing at the time?

thanx 4 that will give it a good disinfectant is there any other precautions you cud recommend
If the film was covering mainly the head, eyes, & back region it was probably Chilodonella and needed treatment with ANTI PARASITE.....It could also be Costia, use same treatment they are both a parasite disease. It costs about 9.99 but be warned Read the Instructions, you will probably only need a few of drops in a tank, all the best,Tom
Question Author
will the parasites live on in the tank even though the fish have gone and its been disinfected. should i just treat any new fish i get as a precaution karen
Sorry for the delay, you should use the treatment for all new fish....The water will go a bluey green colour but will soon go back to normal after a few days, I must point out that you should also treat the new water you put in with a treatment called ( Fresh Start.)...you will only need half a teaspoon in a tank so a bottle will last you years and remember when you get the new fish back home leave them in the plastic bag floating in the tank so the water in the bag goes to the same temperature as the tank water,
Its always expensive when you first start up but it will be worth it, Good Luck.....Tom
