Originally it had two lanes each way with a wide central reservation to add extra lanes later. Its single junction in the middle, the Samlesbury Interchange, survives intact but the M6 itself is now four lanes and the road is unrecognisable. The first full length motorway was the M1, running from London (Aldenham Temporary Motorway Terminal, close to present-day j5) to Rugby (junction 18). Its original spurs, the M10 and M45, opened at the same time and were designed to get traffic off the road before its two terminii back on to the old network. Junctions 1-3 opened later on.
