Got one of these for my birthday, havent downloaded any music yet, someone at work said that u had to use ure own computer to do it, you cant use someone elses is that true???

In principle, it works with iTunes, and is designed to work with one computer only (since this is how the vast majority of people use them).
However, you could easily use something like Yamipod (free download), to manage your music. You can also keep Yamipod itself on the iPod, so you can easily connect it to anyone's computer and use that.
