I have set my wireless router up as per the instructions. My laptop tells me it is connected and connection is excellent but as soon as I unplug the ethernet cable from my laptop I am disconnected from the internet. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong please? My ISP is AOL. I am a beginner so please explain in laymans terms.

Thanks

That would normally indicate you have used either an incorrect network key or are connecting to a secured network without using a key.

Connect using a cable and type http://192.168.1.1 into you browser window. login to the router with the (probable) user name of admin and passord of password. Once your loged in look for wireless setting and security.

Once you have found it change the setting to WPA-PSK and type a pass phrase into the box and save settings

Now disconnect the cable and try to re connect to the wireless, it should ask you for a type the pass phrase in, type that in and you should be connected OK
run the wireless network wizard - your laptop can see the wireless - but doesn't have permission to connect

either on the back of the box - or on one of the setup screens (generally wireless or security)
you'll see a WEP key
leave it on 64 bit - and make a note of the numbers (and letters) - 4ea191fec8

enter when the wizz asks for it - and that should be it
also rename the router if you haven't done already - (default is soooo naff)
c lawrence ....how about CLAW?
If you are trying to use wi fi have you set up wi fi on your laptop and router?

Have you switched on wi fi on your laptop (there is normally a switch to turn wi fi on and off)?

If your wi fi is set up on both the router AND the laptop try turning OFF any wi fi security you have and see if that works.

After unplugging the ethernet cable turn off your laptop and turn it on again WITHOUT ETHERNET CABLE and see if you wi fi starts to work.
a simultaneous arrival - I've read about them in books - never thought I'd have one ;)
(esp wif a bloke!!!!)
it's turned into a threesome .... I'm confused - don't know which way to turn ;(
