Paving slabs. Seriously! Clematis like their roots to be cool and in the shade, and love being planted in a small hole in a paved area, so long as the rest of the plant is in full sunshine. Helps reduce any problem over roots drying out, too. Otherwise, just use a bark mulch. Avoid peat.
