GT and GTi
What does GT/Gti stand for??Is it Grand tourer.If so, how can smallies like Peugeot come with GTi?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I'm led to believe that GTI used by Volkswagen refers to the name of the styling house that is employed to make the cars more sporty. They were the first to use the badge anyway. For other makes its a way of flogging off sexed-up versions of cheaply manufactured naff cars (Ford Escort, Peugeots, Renaults, etc.) by stealing the GT/GTi name and claiming that it means Grand Tourer Injection.
Collins English Dictionary defines "GT" as "gran turismo" which is Italian for "great touring".
Also agree it seems a strange title for smaller cars - but is that because were are comparing them to today's "People Carriers" and the ease/luxury of touring in these vehicles?
Remember there is a long heritage of classic small cars with a GT badge e.g. MGB GT.
