My mum has been suffering with itching in the private area and also she dreads going to the loo as it burns. She won't go to the doctors as shes embarrassed. Any suggestions if she can get anything from the chemist.

Sounds like an infection, more often than not it's something and nothing. She needs to get over her embarrssment and go to her GP. He won't bat and eye you know, he'll have seen far worse things!

The burning when she pees, could be just a reaction to her itching.
*bat AN aye, not and- sorry.
Sounds like thrush - there are plenty of over the counter remedies available from the chemist, such as canesten.

She should really see the doctor though.

Canesten might help ?

peace and love peace and love peace and love peace and love !
sounds a bit like cystitis to me....if you drink loads of cranberry juice and eat yoghurt it goes away really quick but dont wear tight pants either!!
you could run a bath and put a cap full of dettol in and just chill out in there for a bit just to kill any germs and make sure everythings clean
theres loads of stuff you can buy at boots and at chemists

hope it clears up soon!!
xx
Cystitis doesn't usually cause itching - it is a bladder inflammation that makes you go to the toilet a lot, causes a stinging, burning pain on passing water and can make you feel quite ill.
Is she worried it's something like an STD or similar which she'd be embarrassed about or more that she is embarrassed about discussing her private bits or the thought they may think she's unclean or similar?

I'm with Ethel with thrush which could be from something as simple as wearing tight trousers or tights.

There are over the counter remedies though I'd take into account how long she has had it, how severe the symptoms are and any other conditions she may have such as diabetes or immune problems which would strongly suggest she should see her GP.

Unless there is good reason they're not likely to look down there if the symptoms suggest something common like thrush. They are more likely to try a treatment and review if it doesn't clear up after a few days.

She could go to a walk in or GUM clinic if it's the particular GP she is worried about seeing, possibly even the practice nurse though she should check with the surgery if they can deal with this first.

She must have been through some kind of examinations if she has been through childbirth, had smears etc... so should know they have seen it all before.

She can also ask for a private consultation with a pharmacist and if she goes to a larger store like Boots is more likely to have women pharmacists available.
Diagnosis comes before treatment. All this Pharmacy talk is a load of total nonsense. She needs to be examined by a doctor, investigated and treated. There could be dozens of condtions causing these symptoms.
Your mum definately needs to go to the doctor. She cant afford to ignore ANY problems in that region. My mum had a lot of itching in that area & was scratching herself so much that she bled which caused an infection. I knew nothing about her "problem" until the infection set in. Like your mum, she was too embarrassed about it. Btw, my mum was in her 70`s at the time.
I had to go to the doctor last year with a problem up my bum (anus).

I had to drop my trousers and he had to poke around in there with his fingers (gloves on of course).

Believe me the doctor will not be embarresed at all.

Tell her to get down there quickly.
