What was going on?

I live in Middleton, Manchester. On Fri, about 1 p.m., a VW Golf came tearing into our street. He must have been doing 50 mph. He was followed by an unmarked police car, sirens blaring. But we live in a cul-de-sac, so I thought that was that. Got 'em! But the guys in the Golf must know the score with these things. When they got to the top of the street, they stayed in the car. The police piled out and started battering the Golf with baseball bats. Big lads too. But they couldn't break the windows. Not a one. The Golf just did a 3 point turn and raced off down the pavement, out of the street, while the cops were still getting in their car. I haven't heard or seen anything on the news, so I don't know what it was all about. What amazed me was the way the Golf withstood the pounding from the baseball bats. Are they made that way now or would it have been fitted with toughened glass?

You could try searching the news archives for the MEN and Granada news/BBC Manchester.
Trouble is, I've seen loads of things round Manchester but you never get to know what happened half the time as there is other stuff being reported.
I have to say it does worry me that some of the stuff is not reported on the news, sad sign of the times.
