Evening all!! My supervisor (not my boss) at work has a tendency to text me if she is off sick or late (which is quite often!!!!) So when I came down with food poisoning Friday evening I presumed I would be okay to send a text Sunday afternoon explaining I was unwell and unable to come to work on Monday (today)! Firstly I felt uncomfortable talking on the phone as i was really ill and secondly I thought it a little inappropriate to phone her on a Sunday afternoon. All fit and well now to go back to work tomorrow however just received a text off her saying Ensure you phone me in the morning if you are off again, do NOT just send a text!!! Im dreading going in tomorrow now, i feel nervous and can feel a confrontation coming on (which i hate) she is very rude towards me as it is and feel this has just give her more reason to have a go! How can I explain that I thought it would be okay to send a message, especially since she sends them me often on a daily basis, I just presumed it would be okay!!!!!

what an irritating woman! I'd smile sweetly, apologise and say that you assumed it would be okay, as she does the same to you.

You dont need to explain, she has pointed out that you need to phone in the morning, thats it!

dont start dreading anything, if she is @rsey about it apologise for calling at the wrong time and leave it there. dont get emotional or upset.

Yep, I agree with Sara.... just stay calm and say well, that's what I thought I was supposed to do, as that's what *Supervisor's Name* does to me.... Nobody told me otherwise....

It might be worth finding out what the official company policy on sickness notification is though, for the future !
I shouldn't mention it unless she brings the subject up. If she does say anything apologise and say that you assumed it was her preferred method of communication but that in future you will phone as requested. Just keep cool - no need to dread going in.
Hehe... love that Bensmum ! *preferred method of communication*.... yep, that's the phrase to use...
So she texts you to say not to text her.

Quality staff at your place!
I have exactly the same problem at my work, Ray-anne. They feel it is fine to text me with all their woes, but the minute I text them to say I am off work, they say I have to phone in. Well, what if I had lost my voice, or died, or something like that? How could I phone in then?
tell here to do one and get a life
the difference ere is in the relationship perhaps she phoned her supervisor o advise of her illnesses and justs txts you to let you know. As a supervisor the policy in our departmnt is staff phone us directly to advise of illness as opposed to txt which I fully support. Sorry to hear you were unwell ray but perhaps you could have phoned this morning to advise your supervisor as opposed to contacting her on a sunday. In saying that i reckon you will be fine all they will do will be to advise you of policy on sick leave in the future good luck

Great advice! Many thanks...thinking over i do actually think its very unprofessional to send a message explaining i was ill, but didnt think much of it at the time, ss long as she was aware that i would not be in! She will undoubtedly confront me about this as she is a very argumentative person (not just with me) so a little nervous as expected...good advice though 'smile sweetly and say sorry' Thanks Sara3 :-)
good for you!

then make an effigy and stick pins in it ;o)
Just make sure in future that when you have to report her sickness to someone, you mention she sent her excuses by text message.
