wireless connection- unsecure

I have just recently had a wireless connection- however when i checked on another laptop it showed my wireless as unsecure- and on my laptop it also confirms unsecure i tried and i can't seem to set a password -it is all v confusing with weird jargon and settings. I entered the router number IP but how do i put in WAP (if that is what i am supposed to do)
Is there a simple /generic way of securing a wireless connection ?
