Trying to put photos onto a CD

I have never had problems with this before, but every time I try to copy photos from my computer to a CD, however many photos there are, I get this window:

'Windows encountered a problem while trying to copy this folder'

And I can't copy. What should I do? I have Windows XP and am using Tesco CD-R 700MB disks which are brand new.

I would try burning something other than the photos from that specific folder. If it works then maybe the folder has been corrupted or something. Could try creating another folder with a different name and cutting and pasting the photos into the new folder. Might be worth buying a single CD-RW so you're not wasting disks with each attempt (though hopefully it won't take too many attempts).

Do you have a USB key or external hard drive? Try copying over to that and see if you still get the same error message.

Thanks, I'm not technical but I copied the folder which was in My Pictures, into My Documents, and I got the same window. I will try re-naming it, but I can't seem to download any of my photo files although I used to be able to back them all up on CDs. As I say I'm not technical so whatever else you asked me to do, can you tell me how to do it easily ?? Sorry monty don't know what a USB key is .... how do I copy over ?? Thanks.

Hi Smurfchops. When you say you can't download any of your photo files, can you clarify? Is it possible to try downloading your photos from your camera again?

A USB key (aka flash key and flash drive among other names) is used in the same way as a floppy but is far superior. An example of one is here:

When I back up photos onto a dvd (same process as a CD and if you can burn to dvd then I'd recommend it as they hold a LOT more photos), I use the 'data disc' option on my software.

I also back up photos and documents onto an external hard drive (just plug and play).

I loaded all the photos into My Pictures with a little Memory Card thing that plugs into the front of my hard drive, about �6.99 from Amazon, I think it is a USB key, it is made by Kingston. . But in the past, I used the long grey 'wire' that came with the camera to plug into my PC and downloaded photos that way, but now I can't even get those older photos onto my CD. The DVD disc won't work. Unfortunately I have deleted everything from my camera.

I bought Tesco recordable CDs and have same problem with music......maybe the data is too big for the CD? I try with 20 songs but delete to about 18 and cross my fingers/toes/legs/eyes.....sometimes it works!

Terambulam has a point - maybe you're trying to burn too many photos and they won't fit on the disc. I'd have thought you would have got an error message specific to this though. Try burning say, 20 photos and see what happens (you can always add the rest). The Kingston thing you mention sounds like a card reader rather than an actual flash key but it works the same way - you should be able to load the photos back on to the camera card. If this works then it's definitely a CD issue rather than with your pics (which I'm pretty sure is the case anyway).

I tried downloading just two photos, and it didn't work. Maybe I will buy some new CDs ... what make would you recommend ??

Hmm..that's odd - maybe it is down to the cds. Do you have a poundshop near you? If so I would bauy a pack out of there (4 for �1) so you can try burning onto disc without burning a hole in your pocket (sorry for the naff 'joke' - couldn't resist). If you want to buy quality CDs (for keeping data for a long time), I'd go with one of the well-known brands such as Philips, Sony etc.

For storage, I'd highly recommend a small, extremely easy to use plug-n-play external hard drive such as the one here:

I'm so glad I got one of these. Of course, I back up my photos on to discs as well because I'm paranoid!!

Hi Smurfchops, i've just typed in the same question as you & your problem came up, i've done all the things that you were recomended to do & am still having the same problem!!! have you found a solution to it yet?? best wishes cathy

cathy, in the end I had to buy Kodak CD-R discs from Tesco, and my PC seems to like them better than Own Brand CDs. I open the photos in My Pictures, then open My Computer / DVD CD RW Drive on top, then I 'drag' the picture file into the DVD logo and it copies that way. Hope I have explained that OK. Good luck !
