sash windows
a friend has moved to a house with old sash windows, they will not close properly but leave about a 2 inch gap on closing. at the top. is there anything that can be done to release them for proper closure . many thanks for any help.

Do they stick, so can't be closed, or can they be closed, but drop down once they're released? If it's the latter, it's usually because the weights are not dropping fully, but are sitting on debris that has accumulated over time inside the box frame.

yes it could well be debris but some times the sash cords that are attached to both sides of the sash frame get old and stretch so allowing the weight to bottom before the sash closes up, you will find the weights in screwed up covers to side pockets of the casing, secure the sash up first then re tie the knot to shorten the cord hth Tez
