In humans the brain is actually composed of two halves, which are not completely identical. Lateralisation means that each half has different functional specialisations, but the left side of the brain doesn't control the right side of the body or vice versa. Roughly speaking the left side specialises in language whereas the right side specialises in spatial recognition. Which is why we may never know whether non-human animals have the same lateralisation of the brain because of the problems of recognising and understanding animal communication and spatial awareness and relating them to neural anatomy.
