away without leave i think
no it means 'ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE' its a word used by people in the forces, usually the army. when a soldier runs off and doesnt show up then he has gone 'awol' because they sign a contract sayin how many yrs they will stay in the army and if they are caught goin awol then they can do a sentance in the army prison, its a very serious offence

The OED says "absent without leave (orig. US)" and gives a quotation from American Speech IV in 1929 which defines it as that.
absent without leave - charge of absconding to military personnel such as soldiers. very serious charge which can lead to imprisonment in military jail or being chucked out dependent on the severity of the individual case
