Cashing a cheque

I received a cheque yesterday for my son, for a xmas present.
The cheque is made out to his first name and my surname, whilst he is actually known as his dads surname (on birh cert etc).
Are we able to put the cheque into his account and i give the bank his birth cert which has my name on etc so they can see that it is me who is his mum and my surname is that on the cheque?

I feel a bit cheeky asking the person to change the cheque into the right name!
Thanks

Factor & Pickle are right. But you could try - often the cashier does not bother checking!
