I'm a communications student and would love to be a writer. Really keen to join a forum of established and upcoming writers to discuss the art and improve. Any suggestions?

You'll find many forums on the web. If you are looking for something more stable and personal, maybe TabUp.com could help you. I've registered there and use the forums there to discuss health related topics. If I'm not mistaken it's got forums for every hobby and skill. It could be what you're looking for.

It's been going for some years now, has professional, published and amateur writers on board and has well-known guest contributors too. It has forums for just about every form and genre you can think of, exercise and tutorial ones, and areas where you can just submit stuff for crit.

And it's very friendly too - and British!
