You could try buying extra RAM.....which is relatively cheap these day.
Other than that, might be some programs running in the background which dont need to be running.
Maybe try uninstalling stuff which isnt used....

as MrBounty says Vista need lot of ram, so if it hass less than one Gig then upgrade.
Probably a good idea to run a full spyware scan on it to if it's not been done lately.

Also Vista can be sped up a fair bit on some systems by turning off all the fancy visual effects. Right click on Computer, select "Properties" then chose "Advanced System Settings", and, on the "Advanced" tab, click the "Settings" button under the "Performance" section. Go to the "Visual Effects" tab; there you can choose options to enable or disable certain visual effects,
or just click the "adjust for best performance" button at the top
if it's still slow then it's possibly loading a load of rubbish at startup thats not needed

Find out how much RAM memory it has.
If it has 512Mb that is too little. If it has 1Gb that is better, but it may strugle. If it has 2Gb that is about right.
Use the scanner tool on this web site too see what memory you have, and what you can fit in it

Most laptops come with 2 "slots" for memory. If you need to upgrade it to 2Gb you may need to buy two 1Gb strips and take out what you already have in the laptop.
