I have an N reg mondeo.  When I bought this car I was given two keys both with black tops.  One had an inbuilt light.  Having lost one key I want to get a replacement but have been quoted 100 by a ford dealer because I haven't got a key with a red top which was issued when the car was first purchased.

Is there a cheaper solution?

I doubt it. The key with the red bit has the master transponder code in it, or something.
the red key is the MASTER  key. it has a transponder in it which enables the other keys to be programmed to talk to the cars in built imobiliser. so, unless you find the master, your'e stuck. check the car well, because i recently found mine under the carpet in the boot quite by chance.
we had a M reg Mondeo that had a spare key in a magnet holder under the car.
