word 2008?

Do you have a mac then?

Open office can save in a lot of different formats, word format is one of the ones you can select. as long as you save the document in a word format it will open on MS word fine.

Open Office 3 does support .docx format, however, it's a stupidly complex format, so only Microsoft Office supports it 100% currently.

As long as you don't produce very complicated documents (and 90% of Word users don't), you'll be fine.
