Hey all, is it true that ladybirds can bite?

Many thanks,'wildwood' and 'tartanwizard' I did mean 'bite humans' The reason i asked was my ''beloved'' sister in law has my nieces and nephews terrified of these gorgeous little creatures and is always saying they 'bite'!! I remember as a child loving collecting as many as possible for my 'daddys' garden and so wish my nieces and nephews could do the same without the fear that 'witch' has instilled in them.....thanks again xxxx

Sorry to disagree Wildwood and Tartanwizard, but if you get a glut of ladybirds and they are short of food they will indeed bite humans. It is a small nip, which stings for a moment or two, but leaves no lasting effect. Normally the things will run over your hands without a worry, but if they are hungry be prepared!

I've been bit! so the answer is yes. But up until then I could've sworn they didn't bite, so there you go ... YLANTED!

Hey fluffyspit, you don't have to stop the kids from holding ladybirds - I got through my entire childhood without being bit and I practically lived in my garden. Just tell your kids that they 'nip' not 'bite' - semantics I know, but 'bite' sounds intentional whereas 'nip' is not so threatening. Just point out they've survived mozzie bites and (perhaps) horsefly bites, so a ladybird nip isn't worth worrying about.

thank you 'Tief', you are right, but try convincing a child that has been brought up to 'Run....run like hell at the mere sight of a spider/fly/ladybird/cobweb/bee'..........I could go on! But I will try your advice, there is a difference between nip and bite yeah!.......so wish me luck, I really wish a giant ladybird would come and nip 'her' head off ha ha, thanks again, xxxxxxxxx:0)xxxxxxxx
